The Uzbek government signed an agreement with the Saudi company ACWA Power to build two solar power plants with a total capacity of 1,400 MW in Tashkent and Samarkand oblasts and 1,200 MW of energy storage systems in three regions. These projects will attract $2.5 billion in investment.

An investment agreement for the construction of two new solar power plants in Uzbekistan by Saudi Arabia's ACWA Power was signed on March 4, according to the press service of the Ministry of Energy and the Ministry of Investment, Industry and Trade.

The agreement provides for

400 MW solar photovoltaic power plant and 400 MW energy storage system in Tashkent Oblast;

1,000 MW solar photovoltaic power plant and 400 MW energy storage system in the Samarkand region;

400 MW of energy storage systems in the Bukhara region.

These projects also include the construction of high-voltage transmission lines.

These projects will reportedly attract investments of $2.5 billion.

During the event, construction of a 400 MW solar photovoltaic power plant in the Tashkent region began. It is expected to generate 900 million kWh of electricity per year, save 257 million cubic meters of natural gas and prevent 360,000 tons of harmful gas emissions into the atmosphere.

ACWA Power will provide design, financing, construction and operation services for the plant over the next 25 years.

According to the Ministry of Energy, the project to implement an energy storage system in Uzbekistan will be "the largest in the region and will play an important role in the stabilization of the country's energy system and the development of renewable energy sources.

Energy storage systems can prevent the impact of unstable renewable energy sources on the single grid, accumulate excess power during production and use the accumulated energy during low production.

The implementation of these projects is planned to create more than 3,000 new jobs in construction, 300 new jobs in operations, 3.5 billion kWh of electricity per year and 1 billion cubic meters of natural gas savings per year.

ACWA Power's total investment in energy projects in Uzbekistan is $7.5 billion.
