Saudi Energy Minister Abdulaziz bin Salman Al Saud said a group of experts conducted a geographic survey to identify 1,200 sites for wind and solar projects across Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Energy Minister Abdulaziz bin Salman Al Saud said experts have identified 1,200 sites across the country where large-scale wind and solar projects could be developed.

The minister made the announcement at the Digital Government Forum in Riyadh, local media reported. He said the sites are spread across the country. The sites were identified through a geographical survey.

Saudi Arabia solar projects

Researchers at King Abdulaziz University recently conducted a techno-economic analysis of utility-scale wind and solar power plants in Saudi Arabia. They found that current tax levels make these projects economically unfeasible.

The Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC) recently launched the fifth round of the Saudi government's National Renewable Energy Program (NREP).

Saudi Arabia's main solar lobby said last year that the government aims to produce 27.5GW of renewable energy by 2030. According to the International Renewable Energy Association (IRENA), this is a significant leap from the country's current stranded installed capacity; which is estimated at 390MW by the end of 2022.
